Essay for the Masonic Lodge Scholarship

The essay required is on the topic of early Texas Masons. Most people do not realize that many of the men that formed the early history of Texas were Masons. Some of these are Sam Houston, Mirabeau B. Lamar, James W. Fannin, Jose Antonio Navarro, William B. Travis, Davy Crockett, Steven F. Austin, Moses Austin, Ben Milam, Anson Jones, Lorenzo D. Zavala, Jim Bowie, Ben McCulloch, David G. Burnet, Thomas Rusk, and Edward Burleson.

Masonry is the world’s oldest and largest fraternity- dedicated to the brotherhood of man under the fatherhood of God. Masonry and its appendant bodies such as the Scottish Rite, York Rite (Chapter, Council and Commandery of Knight Templar) and the Shrine donate in excess of 1.8 million dollars per day to children’s hospitals.

Masonry teaches strict moral principles and provides a pattern for men to live their lives with reverence, compassion, honesty, morality, kindness and charity. Masonry brings men together in harmony and equality. It is not a secret society. Its principal tenants are belief in God and tolerance of others.
